Report: Manmeen Walia, New Delhi
On 12 September, a secret tip was received in the office of AATS & ABS Cell Outer North District regarding a factory involved in making fake ghee in PH Bhawana. The information was immediately shared with Inspector Pramod Kumar and further placed under the supervision and overall monitoring of DCP Hareshwar Swami.
Since the matter was related to food adulteration, the Food Safety Department was also included in the operation. Acting swiftly, a joint raid was conducted on the suspected premises.
During the raid, the police and Food Safety officials recovered:
- 7,600 litres of adulterated ghee (branded as Avatar Ghee, Desi Ghee, and Avatar Piyo Gaay)
- 900 litres of Vanaspati and peanut oil used for mixing
- Gas stoves and cylinders
- Packaging material, flavours, and colouring agents
- Weighing scales and sealing machines
- Two large mixing machines
The factory was found to be registered under the name of Madhav Gupta, 40 years old, son of Sudhir Gupta, resident of House No. 32, Bazaar Lane, Bhopal Road, Defence Colony, Delhi.
Although Madhav Gupta was not present at the spot, the supervisor Brijesh confessed that the adulterated ghee was being prepared on the owner’s instructions.
The entire consignment was seized, and a case has been registered at PS Bhawana. Police teams are now working to trace the owner and identify the full supply chain of adulterated ghee being distributed in the market.
