On 24Sep at 3:48 PM, a PCR call was received at PS Timar Pur reporting that a “traffic police ko bheed mar rahi hai jiska bike No. DL8SCZ-3924 hai.” SHO/Timar Pur along with staff immediately reached the spot and found that Sub-Inspector Suraj Pal Singh, posted in Timar Pur Circle of Delhi Traffic Police, had been abused and beaten by some persons. His uniform was torn, and he sustained multiple injuries. The injured SI was shifted to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital for medical treatment.
Investigation revealed that while deployed for VIP route duty near GT Karnal Road, Wazirabad Flyover, SI Suraj Pal Singh had signaled two boys riding a scooty without helmets to stop. Instead of complying, they abused him and fled. The SI chased them on his motorcycle and managed to stop them near Signature Bridge. At this point, the riders created a commotion and shouted false allegations, which attracted a crowd. Misled by these false claims, the mob joined in the assault on the SI.
Two accused were overpowered by the public at the spot and handed over to police. They were identified as :-
- Salman (30), resident of Burari
- Akbar Hussain (26), resident of Bhajanpura.
A case was registered under relevant sections for obstructing official duty and assaulting a government servant. Considering the gravity of the matter, a dedicated police team was formed under the supervision of SHO Timar Pur and the guidance of Sh. Shashi Kant, ACP Burari.
During the probe, the incident video surfaced on social media with false allegations against the SI. Investigation revealed that the scooty used was registered in the name of Azeem, r/o Sangam Vihar, Wazirabad. The scooty was recovered, and it was found that it had been used by his nephew Imran.
On 25 Sep, the police team apprehended Imran from his residence. At his instance, another accused Mohd. Afsar was also arrested.
Both Imran and Mohd. Afsar confessed that they were riding the scooty without helmets when stopped. To avoid challan and gain public sympathy, they raised false allegations, which incited locals and led to the assault on the SI.
Based on their statements, Section 299 BNS (spreading communal violence) was also added to the case.
Details of the arrested persons:
• Salman (30 years old) – Completed 10th grade, works in the share market from home, resident of Sant Nagar, Burari.
• Akbar Hussain (26 years old) – School dropout, works as a tailor from home, resident of Chandu Nagar, Bhajanpura.
• Mohd. Afsar (20 years old) – Completed 10th grade, runs an egg kiosk in Sangam Vihar, Wazirabad.
• Imran (20 years old) – School dropout, delivers packed milk in Sangam Vihar, Wazirabad.
Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other persons involved in the assault.
Delhi Police reaffirms that any attempt to obstruct police duty, assault public servants, or spread communal tension will be dealt with strictly as per law.
