Dwarka Police Nabs Couple Behind Series of Jewellery Shop Thefts in Delhi

Report: Manmeen Walia, New Delhi

The Anti-Burglary Cell of Dwarka District Police has arrested a couple identified as Rajeev (35), son of Mohan Lal, and Sanya (34), wife of Rajeev Kumar, both residents of Amritsar, Punjab.

The duo posed as genuine customers in jewellery shops, distracted shopkeepers, and quietly stole jewellery items. They meticulously planned each crime, frequently changing their appearance and mobile numbers.

With their arrest, three cases of shop thefts have been solved, and stolen items including a gold gents’ ring, one pair of earrings, a gold locket, and ₹8,000 cash have been recovered from their possession.

The couple targeted jewellery shops across Delhi, including Burari, Paschim Vihar, Monastery Market (ISBT), Lajpat Nagar, Khan Market, and Dwarka.

During interrogation, it was revealed that both accused—divorcees from Amritsar—got married in 2013. Rajeev, once a property dealer, and Sanya, a graduate, became addicted to drugs in 2023. They lost all their savings and decided to commit thefts in jewellery showrooms to sustain their addiction. Since April 2025, they committed multiple thefts and sold the stolen items at a “Cash for Gold” shop in Kalkaji, Delhi.

On 20 July, complainant Sh. Sahil Arora reported theft in his jewellery shop where a gold ring and a pair of gold tops were stolen. A case was registered at PS Dwarka South

Under the directions of DCP Dwarka, Sh. Ankit Singh, IPS, a dedicated team led by Insp. Vivek Maindola (I/C Anti-Burglary Cell) and supervised by ACP Operations Sh. Ram Avtar was tasked to track the accused.

The team actively analysed CCTV footage, traced cab bookings through IP addresses, and identified the suspects. Based on technical surveillance and swift field action, the couple was apprehended.

Recovered items included:

• One gold gents ring

• One pair of gold earrings

• One gold locket

• ₹8,000 cash

This successful operation highlights the dedicated efforts of the Anti-Burglary Cell, Dwarka District Police, under the able leadership of DCP Ankit Singh, IPS. His consistent guidance and strict monitoring of burglary and theft cases ensured swift action and boosted the morale of the investigating team.

The case not only solved multiple thefts across Delhi but also prevented further crimes, sending a strong message that Delhi Police will not tolerate burglary and theft and will continue to act decisively to safeguard citizens’ property.
